Wolaita Liqa School offers quality education to brilliant and talented OVC's - we support them .. The School is a project of Wolaitta Development Association with its goal to help Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC's) who are brilliant and talented to give them access to quality education.
The school was built in 2006-2007 with support of the Japanese Embassy. The school runs programs from grade 5-10 for students in the 12-20 age group. Even though the students are poor economically, they are high achievers academically. These students are the regions HOPE to bring prosperity.
Wolaitta Liqa School's mission
Students are selected from the entire Wolaitta region, based on three criteria:
Achievements of the Liqa school are remarkable!
Challenges - extensions and improvement plans The student number of 188 in 2008 has risen to 434 in 2011, resulting in a shortage of facilities. In 2010, Wolaitta Development Association launched a number of improvements and extensions to the rapidly growing Wolaitta Liqa School. A new school canteen and additional classrooms are built. Meanwhile, the school cafeteria, new classrooms and new computer lab need to be furnished and equipped. The library and lounge need new equipment and furniture.
Main activities and the results of the improvements 1. Finish, decorate and equip the new school canteen: this provides for a better health and well-being of all 434 students and 17 teachers. 2. furnish and equip the new computer lab: this creates an opportunity to hands-on training with new technologies. 3. Buy extra furniture and equipment for the Library and lounge: the improved library creates an extended learning opportunity for all students and teachers and will improve the quality of education. 434 students and 17 teachers benefit every day from the additional facilities.
Contributors to the improvements: From the start in 2007 ISOB and Int. Secondary School Eindhoven have supported the school with money, books and computers. ISOB support poor students in a joint adoption effort and ISSE students run the Ethiopia project on a continued base. Other International schools have donated many valuable schoolbooks. 4 dutch organisations (ASML foundation, Wees een Kans, ASN foundation and PEAK-IT) contribute to the school's improvement plan during 2010-2012.
ASN Foundation contributed € 1000 to the Liqa school improvement plan in November 2010.
WODA, the owner of the school, built the new classrooms, computer lab and school canteen with support from the local community (400,000 members who contribute financially and materially). We expect all above mentioned improvements to be ready in 2012. A report will follow.
