Wolaitta Liqa School Improvement Plan Print E-mail

Wolaita Liqa School offers quality education to brilliant and talented OVC's - we support them ..

The School is a project of Wolaitta Development Association with its goal to help Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC's) who are brilliant and talented to give them access to quality education.

Liqa school

The school was built in 2006-2007 with support of the Japanese Embassy.  The school runs programs from grade 5-10 for students in the 12-20 age group. Even though the students are poor economically, they are high achievers academically.  These students are the regions HOPE to bring prosperity.

Wolaitta Liqa School's mission
Providing quality education to economically disadvantaged children, who are however, talented, ambitious and motivated to learn. WODA invest in these children with a long term expectation of working toward a more prosperous Wolaitta region.

Students are selected from the entire Wolaitta region, based on three criteria:
1. OVC (Orphan Vulnerable Children)
2. Economically disadvantaged
3. Talented and with good ambitions and abilities to learn.

Achievements of the Liqa school are remarkable!
Educational outcomes are good and - surprisingly - the school scores high in national academic competitions and exams. The school had won already twice prizes. The latest National Examination results are amazing - out of 56 examinees in the 2011 academic year 9 students achieved between 3.43 - 3.86 and 47 students achieved 4.00 !

Challenges - extensions  and improvement plans

The student number of 188 in 2008 has risen to 434 in 2011, resulting in a shortage of facilities. In 2010, Wolaitta Development Association launched a number of improvements and extensions to the rapidly growing Wolaitta Liqa School. A new school canteen and additional classrooms are built. Meanwhile, the school cafeteria, new classrooms and new computer lab need to be furnished and equipped. The library and lounge need new equipment and furniture.

Main activities and the results of the improvements

1. Finish, decorate and equip the new school canteen: this provides for a better health and well-being of all 434 students and 17 teachers.

2. furnish and equip the new computer lab: this creates an opportunity to hands-on training with new technologies.

3. Buy extra furniture and equipment for the Library and lounge: the improved library creates an extended learning opportunity for all students and teachers and will improve the quality of education.

434 students and 17 teachers benefit every day from the additional facilities.

Contributors to the improvements:

From the start in 2007 ISOB and Int. Secondary School Eindhoven have supported the school with money, books and computers. ISOB support poor students in a joint adoption effort and ISSE students run the Ethiopia project on a continued base. Other International schools have donated many valuable schoolbooks. 4 dutch organisations (ASML foundation, Wees een Kans, ASN foundation and PEAK-IT)  contribute to the school's improvement plan during 2010-2012.

ISOB Foundation signed a Donation Agreement (DA) with ASML Foundation in Veldhoven in the Netherlands. At the foto you see ASML Foundation Director H. van Engelen with ISOB Chairman Z. Ayde signing the Agreement. At the background is a fabulous view over ASML Company.  The DA covers a contribution of € 5100 for the Liqa school and will be used to improve and equip the new computer lab and library. These activities are most consistent with the objectives of ASML  Foundation. (December 2011).

ASN Foundation

ASN Foundation contributed € 1000 to the Liqa school improvement plan in November 2010.

Stichting Wees een Kans Stichting “Wees een Kans” contributed € 3000 in October 2011. WODA are almost finished with building and furnishing the canteen.

PEAK-IT PEAK-IT in Naarden contributed € 500 for the transport of study materials (April 2011).  Books and computers are on the way to the school.

WODA, the owner of the school, built the new classrooms, computer lab and school canteen with support from the local community (400,000 members who contribute financially and materially). We expect all above mentioned improvements to be ready in 2012.  A report will follow.
